What does STAR certification mean?
STAR is a California Bureau of Automotive Repair program. Stations that participate must meet higher performance standards. Some vehicles — for example, those the state has identified as higher-emitting — are directed to a STAR station for their smog inspection.
Does my vehicle need a STAR station?
Check your DMV registration renewal notice. If it says your vehicle must be inspected at a STAR station, you’ll need one. If it doesn’t, any licensed smog station may inspect it — and a STAR station can too.
Why a test-only STAR station?
Test-only means we inspect vehicles and do not perform repairs. That keeps the inspection separate from any repair work. If your vehicle fails, we’ll give you the report and you choose where to have it repaired.

How do I know if my vehicle must go to a STAR station?
Your DMV registration renewal notice will say if your vehicle is directed to a STAR station. If it only says a smog check is required, any licensed smog station may inspect it. If you’re unsure, call us with your notice in hand.
What is a test-only smog station?
A test-only station performs smog inspections and does not perform repairs. If your vehicle doesn’t pass, you’ll receive the inspection report and can take it to a licensed repair shop of your choice.
