Which diesel vehicles need a smog check?
Under California’s Smog Check program, diesel-powered vehicles that are model year 1998 or newer with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 14,000 lbs or less are subject to inspection. Diesel vehicles from model year 1997 and older are exempt. Unlike gasoline vehicles, diesels don’t get a newer-model-year exemption.

Heavy-duty diesels over 14,000 lbs
